Borbarad

Borbarad is an ancient evil archmage, necromancer and demonologist who had been banished to the outer spheres eons ago. But some of his followers survived and his cult lived on. After many trials,  they managed to bring him back to the world. He appeared in Maraskan, conquered the island and then set out to subjugate the rest of Aventuria with the aid of magic, Demons, Undead and many turncoat or mercenary fighters. He conquered Tobrien, an eastern province of The Empire, some of his minions occupied other areas. Forces of his followers were active almost anywhere, including an air raid with fire bombs on Gareth, capital of The Empire. In the meantime, forces of the Ice-Demon Nagrach invaded the Bornland from the Far North.

But finally, Borbarad's  forces were beaten in the epic battle at the Trolls' Gates, also known as the 3rd Demons' Battle - (There had been two other battles in the history of Aventuria where Demons were invoked by one side). Borbarad was again banished to the outer spheres - hopefully for ever.

However, the coalition that fought against Borbarad was too exhausted to reconquer the areas Borbarad had ravaged. These, now known as the
Black Lands, are ruled by his surviving minions - black magicians, undead dragons, minor demons, turncoat traitors and similar unsavoury characters. They are as occupied with mutually hostile takeover bids as with fighting external enemies.

Borbarad's armies and those of his minions consist basically of Maraskan, Bornland or Empire forces, with a liberal sprinkling of mercenaries, Demons or Undead.

Borbarad himself appeared in person only in the most important battles, usually leaving the job of commanding armies to his minions: lesser mages; turncoat officers or ambitious nobles. One of these should normally command a Borbarad force. The archmage himself should only be used in large-scale HoTT battles of 2 * 24 or 3 * 24 army points, especially a re-play of the battle at the Troll's Gate, and he should be given some extra powers above those of a normal Magician-General (e.g.extra PIPs, better command radius or a +1 on magical attacks).

Demons, monsters and cultists
Borbarad invoked many demons for his purposes, and the magical disruption of the spheres caused by this allowed others to invoke them more easily than was hitherto possible. The following is a shopping list of some of those nasties:which you can add to a Borbarad army.

The Heptarchy of the Black Lands
The Black Lands are the territories ravaged by Borbarad's hosts. They are now ruled by his most powerful minions. The character of each territory and its forces is shaped by the character of its ruler.

Glorania

In the frozen wastes of the far North, where you find ice-demons and dire wolves, is the realm of the witch Glorana.

Coastal Maraskan

A military dictatorship ruled by the former Imperial marshall and governor, Helme Haffax. The domain of demonic warriors, black mercenaries and unruly soldiers.

Central Maraskan

Central Maraskan is the domain of Lizardmen and their Snake-mage overlords who had been allied with Borbarad.

Oron

Formerly part of Arania, a province of The Empire with heavy cultural Novadi influence, under Princess Dimiona, has become a place of slavery, debauchery and perverted pleasures.

Transysilia

The Demon Empire of archmage Galotta, who is very fond of the demono-mechanical inventions of Leonardo his engineer. His most spectacular invention is a Flying Fortress. However, this spectacularly failed during an attack on Gareth. Galotta perished in the crash.

In an earlier time, Galotta was the leader of the Ogre army.

Warunkia

The realm of the undead Dragon Rhazzazor and his hordes of Zombies, Skeletons and other unliving creatures.

Xeraania

Ruled by Xeraan, Arch-Priest of the Church of Borbarad, infested by pirates and sea-demons.

Dragons

Although dragons (except Rhazzazzor) did not take part in Borbarad's campaigns, various Dragons have been known to occasionally join forces with the Lords of the Black Lands.
